Bangladesh has been a cricket-loving nation with a somewhat lackluster World Cup track record, having won just three matches in each of their last four World Cup campaigns and only once making it to the knockout stage. In the 2019 World Cup, they managed victories against South Africa, West Indies, and Afghanistan but faltered in five matches.

Recent Performance

Their journey in the Asia Cup ended prematurely at the Super Four stage. However, Bangladesh did manage to salvage some pride by defeating India in their final game. Subsequently, they faced setbacks when their experimental teams stumbled against New Zealand on home turf, concluding a preparation period marked by more downs than ups. Unfortunately, they are currently grappling with injuries, with Tamim Iqbal nursing a back problem, Ebadot Hossain recovering from a knee issue, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz nursing a hamstring concern.

The omission of Tamim raised eyebrows when the squad was unveiled on September 26. Nevertheless, the team boasts the experience of Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah. Additionally, they have the talents of the 2020 Under-19 World Cup-winning quartet, which includes Towhid Hridoy, Tanzid Hasan, Tanzim Hasan, and Shoriful Islam.

Shakib Al Hasan, a prominent name in Bangladesh cricket, remains a pivotal figure. He showcased outstanding performance in the 2019 World Cup, amassing 606 runs in eight matches at an impressive average of 86.57 despite having limited assistance from his teammates. Shakib recently assumed the role of ODI captain after Tamim’s resignation in August. His batting position at No. 4, coupled with his valuable ten overs in the challenging Indian conditions, will be crucial to Bangladesh’s prospects. Another senior player, Mushfiqur, has been in stellar form this year, especially after moving to the No. 6 slot.

In the bowling department, Taskin Ahmed has been the torchbearer in recent years and will lead the pace attack.
