Former Pakistani leg-spinner Danish Kaneria has suggested that India should consider placing left-hander Ishan Kishan at the number four spot in the first half of the upcoming ODI World Cup, ahead of Shreyas Iyer. Kaneria believes that Kishan’s inclusion would bring a valuable left-handed option to the middle order, adding diversity to India’s batting lineup.

Kishan recently showcased his prowess with a splendid knock of 82 runs from just 81 balls during a group stage match in the Asia Cup against arch-rivals Pakistan. India found themselves in a precarious situation at 66-4 when Kishan partnered with Hardik Pandya, and together they put on an impressive 138-run partnership for the fifth wicket, displaying remarkable composure under pressure.

Known for his ability to accelerate the scoring rate, Kishan is a dynamic presence in the middle order. Danish Kaneria shared his thoughts on his YouTube channel, stating, “It remains to be seen who will secure the No. 4 spot. There could be a choice between Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan. I believe India should opt for Ishan Kishan. Being a left-handed batter, he is likely to face spinners when he comes to bat, making him a promising choice, especially in the tournament’s early stages.”

Meanwhile, India is expected to back KL Rahul, who has made an impressive return to action after recovering from a thigh injury, for the number four position.

On the other hand, Pakistan faced a setback in their opening warm-up match against New Zealand, losing by five wickets despite posting a formidable total of 345 runs. Kaneria expressed concerns about Pakistan’s bowling, stating, “Pakistan needs to work on their bowling, which was exposed in the warm-up match. They must adapt to the conditions. Pakistan missed an opportunity by not including Abrar Ahmed in the squad. Mohammad Nawaz on the other hand score a total 55 runs in 7 overs. I would have preferred to see Imad Wasim in the lineup. Unfortunately, Pakistan’s team composition doesn’t seem ideal, and it could have been improved with the inclusion of Abrar and Imad.”

Pakistan is set to kick off their World Cup 2023 campaign against the Netherlands in Hyderabad on October 6.
